Special Event Report

Preparing for Climate Change

It's fact: Scientists almost universally have concluded that climate change is 99% certain.

The updated National Climate Assessment (NCA), released on April 28, 2014, affirms that the United States is warming. The report warns that, at the current rate of global carbon emissions, climate change in the 21st Century will create additional stresses on people and living environments, and place growing demands on our ability to anticipate, prepare and respond.

ASP's Chicago Chapter presented a special program, Preparing for Climate Change: the Chicago Story, in September. The event was hosted by LiveLab Studios in downtown Chicago. This panel discussion explored actions business and policy communities, including urban centers such as Chicago, should consider to mitigate against and adapt to emerging climate driven realities. The program was streamed online.

Panelists were:

  • Dr. Don Wuebbles, Nobel Prize winner, National Climate Assessment Convening Lead Author and University of Illinois Harry E. Preble Professor of Atmospheric Science. He reviewed the National Climate Assessment findings. He explained that the National Climate Assessment shows that global climate is changing 10 times faster than natural rates.
  • Tom Skilling, WGN TV and Chicago Tribune Meteorologist. Skilling said that the US government spent more than $100 billion in 2012 to address climate related disasters. He said the U.S. government spent more on natural disasters last year than education and transportation combined.
  • Karen Weigert, City of Chicago Chief Sustainability Officer. Weigert addressed the challenge of turning climate change from something distant to something not threatening, but personal. She noted great opportunities for making buildings in Chicago more energy efficient.
  • Mary Gade, President of Gade Environmental Group, LLC, and former Region V Administrator for the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.

MarySue Barrett, president of the Metropolitan Planning Council, moderated the discussion. Also joining was Sir David King, former Science Advisor to UK Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Sir King said that climate change is the diplomatic challenge of the era. The UK has diplomats deployed around the world to drive action on climate change.

This panel made it clear that climate change can no longer be ignored or minimized. It is an increasing dynamic affecting organizations and individuals. Strategic plans and scenarios need to consider the effects of continued climate change.
